“I love where I live. The world is full of many beautiful places, but Bellingham is home for me. I want to do all I can to keep that treasure alive, promote an inclusive and diverse community, and support local prosperity and a good quality of life. My commitment is to make Bellingham a better place for everyone.”

What People Are Saying

About Michael

Michael is a fourth-generation Washington native on one side, and fifth-generation Washingtonian on the other side.

Moving to Bellingham over 20 years ago to raise a family, Michael soon became involved in his community through volunteer work with the PTA and school district, neighborhood associations, and his religious community. In time, this moved along to appointment to the boards of local non-profit organizations, service groups, smart growth advocacy groups, and boards and commissions of the City of Bellingham, particularly focused on neighborhoods and protecting Lake Whatcom.

First elected to the Bellingham City Council in 2010, Michael has proven himself to be an active and engaged leader, going to meet the people he serves in all walks of life and all locations. He is not afraid to raise difficult questions or shy away from complex issues. His sincerity and earnestness have earned the trust of people on many sides of the issues, and the support and endorsement of prominent local leaders and organizations.

A recent empty-nester who has worked as a scientific researcher, a health professional, a paralegal, and all-around handyman, Michael loves nothing more than to spend time with family and friends on hikes in the hills and trails of Whatcom County and beyond.
